Stoneworkers work in the industrial-commercial processing of natural stone. They use machines to process hard and soft stones such as granite, limestone, marble or slate.
They process large, heavy slabs into natural stone products: Covers for store and bar counters, kitchen covers, components for switches and cash registers, table tops, washstands, bathroom or fireplace cladding, stair coverings, floor coverings for indoor and outdoor use, wall and facade cladding, etc.

Before stone carvers start working on the stone, they read the dimensions from plans and transfer them to the rough stone. They receive the plans from architects or kitchen construction companies. In the work preparation department, they redraw the plans and, depending on the workpiece, also create dimensional sketches and templates.

Stone carvers use machines to cut, grind and polish the stone slabs: Milling machines, pneumatic chisels, drills, angle grinders, etc. They mainly produce custom-made products, but also smaller series. Many companies are equipped with CNC machining centers for this purpose. Stone carvers set up these computer-controlled semi-automatic and fully automatic machines, operate them and monitor production. They are also responsible for the maintenance of the machines.
